Whew!! Done with finals! Hurray! Well, anyway, now that I am back among the
living, here is a new monster for all of you. I asked earlier if anyone was
a RPGA member and didn't get any response so none of you have probably seen this
monster yet. It appeared in Polyhedron, issue (I forget just now). They drew
a picture of it and everything . . . wow, neat, who cares. I'm going to try to
post the scanned picture of it soon. I know, who cares, but my roomie wants to
try. Bye.

The phase jelly is a disgusting blob of slime. They can
be any color imaginable, but a specimen will be a single,
uniform color throughout.
COMBAT: The phase jelly attacks exactly as a marine ooze,
its tentacles erupting from the floor, ceiling, or walls of
subterranean passages. The phase jelly has the ability to
phase into and out of solid stone! Its secretions cause 1-2
Hit Points of damage per strike or round of contact, and a
victim must save verses poison at +2 or be paralyzed. This
sudden assault imposes a -3 penalty to opponents attack
roles.
However, the phase jelly has an even more feared form of
attack. If any animal or human stands relatively stationary
in the vicinity of a phase jelly for 3 rounds or more, the
phase jelly for 3 rounds or more, the phase jelly will
attempt to slowly envelope its victim and the phase back into
the stone along with the victim's feet! This attack also
imposes a -3 penalty to the surprise roll and if a victim is
surprised, the attack automatically succeeds. Otherwise, a
successful dexterity check will avoid the attack entirely. A
victim who is phased, however, will lose one-half of his/her
remaining hit points each turn as one forth of his/her body
is consumed by the acidic digestive juices of the phase
jelly. After two turns the unfortunate victim is dead and
will be totally consumed. The phase jelly can only digest
one being at a time, but even hardened adventurers report
that there is no more horrid sight or sound than a companion
being so digested and so most leave the immediate area even
though their lives are not threatened.
The phase jelly is immune to attacks from acid and blunt
weapons. Edged weapons cause only one-half damage but fire,
cold, and electricity cause full damage. Additionally,
electricity will stun any tentacles it touches for 1-10
rounds. The bulk of the phase jelly cannot be harmed at all
while phased into stone, although if brought to less than
half its hit points from the destruction of its tentacles, it
will withdraw from combat.
A phase door or passwall spells will kill the jelly
instantly if it is phased into stone at the time.
Additionally, an earthquake, move earth, rock to mud, or
stone to flesh spell will force the jelly to the surface.
Anyone who melds into stone where a phase jelly resides dies
a horrible death.
There is a 1% chance that the phase jelly will be on the
surface when encountered. It will immediately attempt to
phase into the stone and if unsuccessful, will fight until it
or its opponents are dead.
HABITAT/SOCIETY: This horrid creature inhabits the darkest
dungeons and is a bane to all who travel there. It will
typically phase into the rock floor of passages about three
feet below the surface. While so phase, it can sense the
vibrations of approaching creatures.
Although its digestive secretions can absorb cloth,
flesh, bone and similar materials, they do not effect metal
or glass. Therefore, a pile of armor, weapons and treasure
may be found directly above a phase jelly. These expelled
materials often inadvertently create a trap into which
adventures fall as they greedily gather up the treasure.
Such materials will include treasure types J - M, and Q.
Additionally, an occasional magical weapon, armor, potion, or
ring may also be found.
ECOLOGY: The phase jelly is a predator of all animals and
monsters and should be avoided at all costs. It many times
preys on drow and other subterranean species. The phase
jelly does not scavenge for it cannot locate such food. Due
to lack of insane mages willing to tinker with a phase jelly,
no use has been found for its slime.
